Empowering Dreams: AKRSP's "Apna Karobar" Initiative for Persons with Disabilities in Baltistan

In the picturesque valleys of Baltistan, nestled among towering peaks and serene rivers, a silent revolution is unfolding. The Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP) has taken a transformative step with its "Apna Karobar" initiative, designed specifically to empower persons with disabilities in the districts of Skardu, Kharmang, Ganche, and Shigar. This groundbreaking program is paving the way for inclusivity, economic empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods for both men and women.

A Vision of Inclusivity

In a region where opportunities are often limited, particularly for persons with disabilities, the "Apna Karobar" initiative aims to break barriers. AKRSP believes in the potential of every individual and strives to ensure that disabilities do not define one's future. By focusing on skill development, entrepreneurship, and financial support, this program empowers individuals to create their own businesses, transforming lives and fostering independence.

Why "Apna Karobar" Matters

1. Economic Empowerment

The initiative provides tailored training in areas such as handicrafts, agriculture, technology, and small-scale trade. Participants are equipped with the skills to start and sustain their businesses, contributing to the local economy while achieving financial independence.

2. Gender Equality

Both men and women with disabilities are actively involved, ensuring that gender does not become a barrier to progress. Women, often marginalized in traditional settings, are now becoming entrepreneurs, role models, and agents of change in their communities.

3. Community Integration

By promoting social inclusion, "Apna Karobar" challenges stereotypes and fosters a sense of belonging. The program encourages communities to support and uplift persons with disabilities, creating a more cohesive and understanding society.

Impact on the Districts

Skardu: Known for its tourism and agriculture, participants in Skardu are being trained to leverage these industries, creating unique business opportunities.

Kharmang: With a focus on local crafts and trade, the program is helping individuals tap into traditional skills and modern markets.

Ganche: Entrepreneurs here are exploring innovative ways to enhance agriculture and small-scale industries.

Shigar: Participants in Shigar are utilizing resources to develop eco-friendly products and services, aligning with the region's natural beauty.

A Call to Action
